V*D*O
Merrie Monarch Festival
This is the 1994 version and the 31st
annual. If you
have never experienced Hula the way it is supposed to be performed, then you
gotta see this. The Festival is about preserving the culture. The
dancing is a reminder of a glorious artistic past and the promise of an even
brighter future.
Want to see poetry in motion? Want to see seemingly effortless grace flow
timelessly?
The dances of the men and women of Hawai'i are an unforgettable
experience.

Damien
The made for
t.v. production created by Hawai'i Public
Television is its most inspired
work. You probably know that this unusual man, Damien, was a Roman Catholic
priest
who came to Hawai'i in the mid 1800's. After a number of years as a
parish priest, he was "called" to work with the
victims of leprosy. The lepers, victims of this white man's disease, were
forced to live as an isolated community
separated from family and friends on the island of Moloka'i. The play is a
monologue delivered by Damien as a spirit recalling his life. The production
has won many national awards. The director, creative camera
angles,
and the abstractly realistic mood (difficult to do), use the tube as an art
form in ways rarely seen. If you want
to be moved (you will have to pay attention), see this.

Children of the Long Canoes
The story of the first
Hawaiians is revealed to us through the eyes of artist-historian Herb
Kawainui Kane who
is well known for his paintings depicting Hawaiian history. Images
painted by the artist are seen throughout the presentation. The video
was written and produced by award winning documentarians Trudy and Albert
Kallis. Anyone interested in the history of Hawai'i will like this movie.
Children of all ages will also be absorbed by the beautiful scenery and
colors.

Hawaii's Humpbacks
The story of the humpback
whale, ancient creatures of the depths,
singers of mysterious songs is a celebration of life. These obviously
intelligent creatures winter
in the channel between Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i; where they breed and
have a very good time in the sun and surf. They are quite friendly to
many of the tourists who venture out into the channel to observe these
magnificent creatures at play. There are some fantastic shots of whales
and people communing, eyeball to eyeball with mutual awareness and respect.
This film is a good way to begin to whale watch.
